Here's the tricky part about a website that isn't working: nobody tells you. A visitor doesn't send an email explaining why they left. They just close the tab. So the site keeps sitting there, looking fine to you, while quietly losing business in the background.
If you want to know whether that's happening on your site, here are the places to look first.
It takes too long to load
People decide whether to stay on a website within a few seconds. If your homepage takes five or six seconds to fully load, especially on a phone, you've likely already lost a good chunk of visitors before they saw a single word of your copy. Slow loading is one of the most common, and most fixable, reasons a website underperforms.
It doesn't say what you do, fast enough
Open your homepage and give yourself five seconds. Could a stranger tell what your business does and who it's for? If the answer involves scrolling, squinting, or guessing, that's a problem. Visitors shouldn't have to work to understand your offer.
It looks fine on a laptop, but not on a phone
Most of your visitors are almost certainly browsing on their phone, not a desktop. If buttons are too small to tap, text runs off the screen, or forms are a hassle to fill out on mobile, you're losing customers who never even had the chance to see the desktop version you're proud of.
There's no clear next step
Every page on your site should make it obvious what to do next: call, book a call, buy, or get in touch. If someone lands on your page interested, but has to hunt for how to actually reach you, most people simply won't bother.
It hasn't changed in years
An outdated design does more than look old. It quietly signals that your business might be outdated too, or worse, no longer active. That's an unfair impression to leave on someone who was ready to become a customer.
What to do about it
You don't need to rebuild everything overnight. Start by looking at your site the way a first-time visitor would: on their phone, with fresh eyes, no context. Time how long it takes to understand what you offer and how to contact you. If it takes more than a few seconds, that's your starting point.
If you'd rather have a second pair of eyes look at it properly, that's exactly what our website audits are for. We'll tell you plainly what's working, what isn't, and what to fix first.
